This viewpoint is located on the mountain
Biokovo, the highest mountain in the Dalmatia region, at an elevation of 1228
meters, so here you will literally walk on clouds. On a sunny, windy day you
can see all the way to Italy, on the far side of the Adriatic Sea. The Skywalk
is reached from the Biokovo road that starts at the entrance into Biokovo
Nature Park, about 6 km east of Makarska.
In this beautiful location you can enjoy a gorgeous view overlooking the Old Town, all the way to the lovely town of Cavtat and the island of Lokrum. You can have a romantic picnic next to the remains of the 14th century St Orsula’s Church (this location must be booked in advance). Park is a 25-minute walk from the Old Town or a short ride by bus.
Gata is a small village located above the Cetina River canyon. On the Gradac hill, next to the charming little church of St. George, there is a spectacular view of the mouth of the river Cetina, the town of Omiš, surrounded by fortresses, the Adriatic Sea, and Dalmatian islands. You can reach this hidden gem by car, just a few minutes ride from the center of Omiš and 20 minutes from Split.
One of the most beautiful Croatian viewpoints is in the Vrana Lake Nature Park, 283 meters above sea level. Soak up all the beauty of the view on the largest natural lake in Croatia, the olive groves, and dry walls of Modrava, and the blue sea dotted with the numerous islands, islets, and reefs of the Zadar, Šibenik, and Kornati archipelagos.
To demonstrate that you would go on the top of the world with your loved one, you can start by climbing on one of the highest bell towers in Croatia. The tower is 57m high and is an example of most original Dalmatian Medieval architecture. You can climb the steps to the top, where a striking view of the entire Split awaits you.
You can get another amazing view of Split and the surrounding area, the Adriatic Sea, and the islands of Central Dalmatia by climbing on the Klis Fortress. This medieval fortress built into a rocky ridge was a scenography for the famous Game of Thrones serial. Located in the village of Klis, the fortress is just 20 minutes ride north of Split.
In the northern part of Istria, above the valley of the river Mirna, there is probably the most famous and most attractive Istrian medieval town Motovun-Montona. This whole little town is like a picture from a fairytale, but if we must pick the most romantic place – it would be the tavern Pod Voltom in the sunset. In this family-owned restaurant, you can enjoy the best local dishes and wines, while looking at the dreamlike Mirna valley.
Another impressive medieval fortress, hiding layers and layers of history is Fortica, overlooking the town of Hvar. Inside there's a collection of ancient amphorae recovered from the seabed and outside you can take a rest from climbing through narrow alleys on a terrace cafe. You can also drive to the very top, but we recommend strolling through the town walls, especially at sunset, when the whole town and Pakleni Islands are lit with a golden glow.
The Stončica lighthouse was built way back in 1865 on the cape of the same name on the island of Vis. Vis is the farthest inhabited island off the Croatian mainland which once served as a base for the Yugoslav Army and was closed to foreign visitors from 1950 to 1989, so it has kept much of the original island lifestyle. Today it's easily accessible via a high-speed ferry ride from Split. Wherever you go on this unique island, you'll feel swept away by its beauty, but Stončica Lighthouse is one of our favorite spots.
Like Vis, Mljet island also represents "the Mediterranean as it once was“, with crystal clear blue sea, secluded beaches, and unspoiled nature. Most of this greenest Croatian island is a national park, so just walking along will give you plenty of ideas of where to ask the big question, and afterward, you can take a dip in one of the two saltwater lakes with your loved one.
